In the prologue, we are thrown into a very chaotic scene where a distraught mother is trying to flee the authorities with her four children in tow. She engages her children in a game of ‘duck’ (without their seat belts) while she’s driving at high speeds. Everything comes to a halt when she loses control of the car and crashes.

The story opens with Vanessa Stockton hanging up missing person fliers of her best friend Eliza, who disappeared without a trace five months prior. It seems like everyone in town has moved on with their lives, but Vanessa doesn’t know where to even begin without her best friend at her side. Vanessa is dealt the ultimate blow when Eliza’s parents tell her that she should no longer have an active role in finding Eliza and that she should focus on graduating high school and getting into college.

Just when Vanessa thinks that her life can’t get any worse, the next day she wakes up in Eliza’s room…as Eliza. At first, Vanessa thinks that she’s controlling Eliza, but instead, she realizes that she’s just occupying part of her consciousness alongside Eliza (that sounds super confusing but it totally makes sense when you’re reading it). Vanessa realizes that she can finally understand what happened to Eliza, and hopefully, try to prevent her kidnapping.

I don’t want to give away much more of the plot because at just under 200 pages, this story FLIES by. What I loved most about reading this one is that there are so many twists and turns packed into so few pages. That being said, I never felt that there was a lack of character or plot development. Overall, if you’re looking for a page-turning mystery/thriller that gives you guessing up until the very end, you don’t want to miss out on this story!
