For two sworn enemies, anything can happen during the Hawaiian trip of a lifetime—maybe even love—in this romantic comedy from the New York Times bestselling authors of Roomies.
Olive Torres is used to being the unlucky twin: from inexplicable mishaps to a recent layoff, her life seems to be almost comically jinxed. By contrast, her sister Ami is an eternal champion . . . she even managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a slew of contests. Unfortunately for Olive, the only thing worse than constant bad luck is having to spend the wedding day with the best man (and her nemesis), Ethan Thomas.
Olive braces herself for wedding hell, determined to put on a brave face, but when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. Suddenly there’s a free honeymoon up for grabs, and Olive will be damned if Ethan gets to enjoy paradise solo.
Agreeing to a temporary truce, the pair head for Maui. After all, ten days of bliss is worth having to assume the role of loving newlyweds, right? But the weird thing is . . . Olive doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, the more she pretends to be the luckiest woman alive, the more it feels like she might be.
With Christina Lauren’s “uniquely hilarious and touching voice” (Entertainment Weekly), The Unhoneymooners is a romance for anyone who has ever felt unlucky in love.
When it comes to tropes within contemporary romance and romantic comedies, I am an absolute sucker for the enemies-to-lovers stories. I love watching two people that have all of these preconceived notions about each other slowly start to shed away the misconceptions and unveil the true character underneath. These types of stories turn me into absolute putty, and Christina Lauren’s was no exception. This duo flawlessly executed this in The Unhoneymooners when it comes to Olive Torres and Ethan Thomas, and I just couldn’t get enough!
Olive has some of the worst luck known to mankind. It’s like this woman must’ve shattered an entire room full of mirrors or something. After every single person at her twin sister’s wedding comes down with horrific food poisoning, Olive is offered her sister’s honeymoon/trip of a lifetime, which would be a travesty to go to waste. It seems that Olive’s luck is finally turning around! It only lasted a few minutes though since she didn’t realize that Ami and Dane also offered the Hawaiian dream vacation to Dane’s brother Ethan, who is quite literally the bane of Olive’s existence. Oh well it’s a free trip and they can figure out how to avoid each other, right?!
Watching Olive and Ethan interactions unfold were hysterical. Their initial conversations were mainly comprised of short, snide remarks. However, when Olive’s new boss and wife end up at their same resort, Olive makes the rash decision to pretend that she’s actually married to Ethan (since she’s a terrible liar and couldn’t just confess that she was on her sister’s free honeymoon). While pretending to be married and doing all of the couple activities that were originally meant for Ami and Dane, Olive and Ethan finally start to get to know one another (over couple massages and fruity cocktails, naturally) and that’s when the sexual tension begins to build.
Overall, The Unhoneymooners was so much more than I was expecting for a rom-com. It had me laughing then crying. I went through so many emotions while reading this book, and it was worth every second. If you’re looking for a book that is full of humor, romance, heartbreak, betrayal, and second chances, then pick up this book!
