Meg Tilly returns with a second gripping romantic suspense novel set on the idyllic Solace Island in the Pacific Northwest.
Eve Harris is all set to house-sit and run the bakery she shares with her sister while Maggie goes on her honeymoon, but there’s one problem–the house is already occupied. By a movie star. He claims to be her brother-in-law’s friend, and not only does he insist on staying, he also offers to help. Playing house has never been so tempting…
Rhys Thomas is looking for a place to lie low after wrapping up his latest film, so when Luke offers up his house as a safe haven, Rhys sees the perfect opportunity for a little R & R. But rest is the last thing on his mind as he and Eve grow close.
But Eve and Rhys are not as alone as they think. And as danger trails Eve, it will take everything Rhys has to save the woman he loves.
This was my first introduction to Meg Tilly’s writing, and I honestly wish that I would have discovered her sooner. I was completely entranced with her spellbinding story. Additionally, I did not read Solace Island prior to reading Cliff’s Edge, which is not a necessity.
Maggie and Luke are finally able to take their delayed honeymoon leaving Maggie’s sister Eve Harris to house sit their gorgeous home on Solace Island (in the Pacific Northwest) while they are away. Maggie and Eve are incredibly close are run The Intrepid Cafe and Bakery together. Maggie is the pastry chef master while Eve overseas its finances and administration. This is far from Eve’s dream job since she is a painter, but her art isn’t selling outside of her family and close friends. The bakery is making money, but the increasing amount of debt is a constant source of stress for Eve. To make matters worse, Eve’s love life is non-existent following her break up with her musician boyfriend Levi who only wanted to pursue the thrills of the rockstar lifestyle.
Eve decides that she’s going to use this house-sitting opportunity to just relax, paint, and not think about all of her problems. There’s only one teensy tiny problem. Luke also promised the house to the gorgeous, famous actor (and his best friend) Rhys Thomas, which Eve was unaware of. While the situation is less than ideal, especially since Eve is staving off all men, she decides to give their temporary living arrangement a chance when she realizes that Rhys is actually a pretty good cook, and she could really use the help running the cafe while Maggie is away. Things begin to heat up between Eve and Rhys as they begin to get to know each other, but their relationship is put to the test as danger looms over Eve.
Unbeknownst to both Eve and Rhys, Eve has been selected as the next victim for a mysterious murderer whose POV comes up throughout the story. Reading the murderer’s POV was incredibly chilling. He describes how Eve must be punished for frivolously giving away her affections and the lengths he will go to in order to claim her as his.
This book was everything that I wanted in a romantic suspense. I loved watching the development of Eve and Rhys’s relationship because both of these characters have a background filled with betrayal and heartbreak and neither one trusts easily. They each have to face their past ghosts and break down the barriers surrounding their hearts. I also loved that I was completely in the dark about the person who was stalking Eve. It was so creepy to read his chapters because it was like watching a game of cat and mouse except Eve was completely unaware of the danger she was in. I was guessing all the way until the end, and I was still taken by surprise.
Overall, if you’re looking for a steamy romance that is also a heart-pounding thriller then you don’t want to miss this epic story. I can’t wait for Meg Tilly’s next book!
