No visitors. No nights spent away from the apartment. No disturbing the other residents, all of whom are rich or famous or both. These are the only rules for Jules Larsen’s new job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, one of Manhattan’s most high-profile and mysterious buildings. Recently heartbroken and just plain broke, Jules is taken in by the splendor of her surroundings and accepts the terms, ready to leave her past life behind.

As she gets to know the residents and staff of the Bartholomew, Jules finds herself drawn to fellow apartment sitter Ingrid, who comfortingly, disturbingly reminds her of the sister she lost eight years ago. When Ingrid confides that the Bartholomew is not what it seems and the dark history hidden beneath its gleaming facade is starting to frighten her, Jules brushes it off as a harmless ghost story . . . until the next day, when Ingrid disappears.

Searching for the truth about Ingrid’s disappearance, Jules digs deeper into the Bartholomew’s dark past and into the secrets kept within its walls. Her discovery that Ingrid is not the first apartment sitter to go missing at the Bartholomew pits Jules against the clock as she races to unmask a killer, expose the building’s hidden past, and escape the Bartholomew before her temporary status becomes permanent.

This was my first Riley Sager book, And you better believe that I will be going back to read his others as well.

When it comes to life, Jules Larsen definitely got the short end of the stick. She’s temporarily staying with a friend (that’s to catching her ex with his p ya round his ankles…literally). She got laid off from her job. She has insurmountable debt that is literally crushing her. She’s at her breaking point and her desperation is palpable.

When Jules is given the opportunity to apartment sit at the exclusive Bartholomew for $1000 per week, she can’t sign her name fast enough on the dotted line. Sure there are lots of rules (no visitors, no nights away from the apartment), but that’s to be expected for this type of establishment and that kind of pay.

When Jules starts staying in 12A, things immediately start getting weird as hell. There’s rumors of an insidious history at the Bartholomew. Previous tenants seem to have disappeared without a trace. Additionally, the Bartholomew feels haunted. This book was so incredibly incredibly atmospheric that I got literal chills.

Without giving anything away, this story chock full of suspense and tension that you could cut with a knife. The twists and turns keep me at the edge of my seat. Don’t think that this is a fast paced story because it’s not. It’s that slow-burn that eats away at you and makes you wonder if you’re also starting to lose it.

The last thing that I also wanted to address is that some criticisms of this book is the Jules was an idiot/naïve for being in a situation like this in the first place. As someone who personally knows what it’s like to be at the point of desperation when it comes to money, logic and reason aren’t always the operating as they should be when you have nothing left.

Thank you to Dutton Books for the finished copy. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own.

  1. I think it was REALLY easy to see what it was like through Jules’ shoes actually! I also loved how it kept you on the edge of your seat. I probably would have done everything that she did in her situation. I also loved how atmospheric it was!
